Every single day, brilliant ideas are born across Africa. Young minds see a problem in their neighborhood—whether it’s a food shortage, a lack of local clothing designs, or a tech gap—and they instantly set out to fix it.
But as many young people quickly find out, having a great idea is only step one. Traditional systems teach us how to look for jobs, but they rarely teach us how to build sustainable, wealth-creating businesses from scratch.
That is exactly why Voice1Africa in partnership with Sound Mind BuildUp launched the Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP for Africa). And the results from our recent cohorts have been nothing short of explosive.

The Numbers Behind the Movement
When we first opened applications for Cohort 1, we were thrilled to welcome 321 passionate applicants, heavily driven by creative young minds looking to break into digital skills, content creation, and media production.
But by the time we launched Cohort 2, word had spread across the grassroots networks. The response blew us completely away: applications skyrocketed to nearly 3,800! That is a massive 7.5x growth in just one cycle.
This isn’t just a statistic; it is undeniable proof of the hunger, drive, and commitment pulsing through the next generation of African leaders.
The Who is the Average EDP Entrepreneur
Our data gives us a beautiful, clear picture of the young innovators stepping up to change their communities:
The Energy of Youth: The average age of our participants sits right around 25 to 32 years old. These are early-career individuals and hungry dreamers refusing to sit on the sidelines.
Highly Educated Leaders: Over 70% of our applicants hold university or college degrees. They are brilliant, formally trained minds choosing to channel their knowledge into local enterprise instead of waiting around for corporate employment.
Sectors that Matter: While tech and design are highly popular, the number one sector leading the charge is Agriculture and Farming (23%), followed closely by Fashion & Design (16%) and Food & Beverage (9%). Our youth are focusing heavily on the core industries required to make Africa self-sufficient.
Real Commitment, Real Hustle
What makes the EDP community so inspiring is the sheer dedication of its members. An incredible 93% of our participants committed to putting in 10+ hours every single week alongside their daily jobs or classes to study our modules, build their strategies, and refine their operations.
Most of these businesses are small, early-stage teams of 1 to 3 people. Nearly half of them operate informally without official registration when they start. But through tailored training, real peer mentorship, and structured guidance, we give them the precise roadmap to formalize their setups, balance their budgets, and scale up their profitability.
What Our Participants Are Saying
In their application essays, our students don’t just talk about making money—they talk about healing their communities. They speak openly about navigating economic hardships, creating eco-friendly and sustainable fashion to protect our environment, and providing job pathways for other unemployed youth in their home towns.
From West Africa to the corners of East and Southern Africa, the EDP for Africa Accelerator has grown into a powerful ecosystem of hope.
The Journey Continues
As we prepare to open applications for our upcoming cohorts, we are expanding our reach even further to invite more young visionaries from every single corner of the continent.
Whether you are farming local crops, launching a software app, or designing a clothing line, Voice1Africa and Sound Mind BuildUp are here to give you the blueprint, the accountability, and the community to make your business thrive.
